City As Museum / City As Instrument

PROJECT

Manchester Sonic Meta-ontology encapsulated a number or newly created compositions, sonic events and ambisonics field recording trips across the City of Manchester and the North West of England. The project was showcased in two parts (5th-6th March 2011 and 10th-12th June 2011, the latter as 'City As Augmented Aurality') in the form of concert events and experimental laboratories at Manchester University, Islinton Mill and the City of Manchester. 'Manchester's Sonic Meta-ontology' explored whether there is really such thing as a 'Manchester sound' and if so, what is it, can we experience it, and can we understand it? Substantive empirical investigation took place in partnership with local agents and artists in the region, which looked into the creation, identity, and survival of the real truth of Manchester's Sound. We were very proud to have Helmut Lemke (University of Salford, UK) as the keynote and main contributor to this edition but there was a lot more as seen below.

Helmut Lemke presented and performed his work in response to the festivals question „whether there is really such thing as a 'Manchester sound' and if so, what is it, can we experience it, and can we understand it“. The key points of his contributions are: existence of question, approach to an answer listing of angles, rollin' those dices, recordin' that voices and avoiding conclusions.
