About Coupland Hub

Coupland Hub is an Eco-System builder space started in October 2016 by NOVARS Research Centre - University of Manchester, as a framework to facilitate the transition from students' research projects to entrepreneurial opportunities.
Coupland Hub aims to build a strategic framework which encourages the exploration, discussion and understanding of how and when, our computer music and media knowledge can transit towards entrepreneurship at the intersections of Research, Technology and Social Change. After almost 10 years since NOVARS started, we saw a clear trend among our postgraduate community to transform their passions and focused knowledge into viable small companies, rather than taking the traditional routes of employment, including continuing in academia. Many of these startups emerged as spin-offs of their music and media tools at Uni, which although beneffited from our academic guidance, rarely had any formal entrepreneurial support from staff.
.

How it works?

Coupland Hub brings back and supports successful NOVARS almumni entrepreneurs so that they can tell current ones their transition and story. It also functions as a catalyst for NOVARS's vision, to promote entrepreneurial mentality, social responsibility, engage in meetups with social agents and raise awareness among University colleagues about our student needs in terms of support and professional coaching.
It creates a Meeting Point and Space for researchers and external organisations to procure flow between ideas and academic research, including aside projects, with potential to be stretched beyond their academic existence.
Coupland Hub organises inspirational talks to ignite students with great ideas to push on their projects.

Why Coupland Hub is equal to great ideas?

NOVARS and the Martin Harris Centre are based in the iconic Coupland Street, Manchester, which is (arguably) considered to be the first scientific park in the world! Since early XXth Century, Coupland Street at The University of Manchester (formerly Victoria University) has been home for ideas, innovation and experimentation that changed the world. From physicist Ernest Rutherford splitting the Atom, creating the first stored-program computer in 1948 (Williams, Kilburn and Tootill) - the Manchester's "Baby" Computer -, to Alan Turing (based above William's lab) whose 1950's paper "In Mind", questioned whether computers can think like humans, which strongly influenced modern Artificial Intelligence. He joined mathematician and code-breaker Max Newman at Uni and helped with the construction of the "Baby" here in Coupland and Bridgeford street.

  • Virtuoso pilot Project kick-off

    July-September 2017

This HSIF-funded project Virtuoso, is a collaborative effort between Manchester University academics from Music (NOVARS Research Centre), the Alliance Manchester Business School and EON Reality (https://www.eonreality.com/), a company specialised in Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) software for Education and Training.
Technical goals: We set a 2-month task to build a Prof of Concept (POC) by developing a multimodal capturing platform able to collect a range of real-time bio-related data, as well as other data, such as pitch data and live movement. We wanted to see whether it was technically possible to spot performative differences between professional and an intermediate-level violin players, based on a set of prepared musical exercises. Also we wanted to recreate the player in 3D and VR to potentially connect extracted data with virtual behaviour and visualise those differences.

    2015-2016

    Organising Sound with Encrypted Thinking:
Data encryption has become a matter of National Priority and Security across most countries around the world but it is also becoming hugely important among normal people. Monitoring, processing and the interception of encrypted information have been a matter of controversy and debate in public and private domains. Can cryptology and encryption strongly inform the way we Organise Sound and Media? To what extent Creativity and Aural Invention can contribute to ciphering/de-ciphering "the message"?. This is what I am after!
